Helping clients access drug court programs as an effective alternative to incarceration.
Free Case EvaluationDrug Courts in Washington provide an alternative to traditional criminal justice for drug-addicted offenders. They employ extensive supervision and treatment programs rather than relying solely on incarceration or probation. At the Law Office of Erin Bradley McAleer, we help clients access drug court programs and support them throughout the process.
The drug court system addresses drug-using offenders within the community through tailored intervention levels. Research has shown that incarceration alone does little to break the cycle of drugs and crime. Drug courts offer a proven alternative that reduces recidivism while holding participants accountable.
Drug Court Can Lead to Dismissed Charges
Successful completion of drug court typically results in the dismissal of criminal charges, giving you the opportunity to move forward without a felony conviction on your record. A 1997 GAO Report found that 71% of participants successfully completed or were actively participating in their programs.
Drug court serves individuals arrested for non-violent drug offenses only. Applicants with prior violent crimes or sex offenses are ineligible. The process begins with an individual application, after which prosecutors, defense counsel, and case managers determine enrollment eligibility.
Candidates may be denied admission for the following reasons:
The National Association of Drug Court Professionals (NADCP) has established eight key components that define effective drug courts:
Drug court programs have demonstrated strong results. Since 1989, there have been over 122,000 graduates or active participants nationwide. Urine testing comparisons have shown that drug court participants have the lowest drug-use rates of any supervised population. The majority of drug court participants had no arrests during the 18-month observation period following enrollment.
Requests for admission are submitted to the prosecutor's office, which approves or denies the request based on the candidate's file. Approved candidates are then forwarded to the case manager, who may also reject a candidate for therapeutic reasons. Only upon case manager approval is the candidate formally accepted into the program.
