Intent Is a Key Element in Fraud Cases

Fraud charges require the prosecution to prove that you knowingly and intentionally deceived someone for financial gain. Honest mistakes, miscommunications, and misunderstandings are not fraud. An experienced defense attorney can demonstrate the absence of criminal intent and fight to have charges reduced or dismissed.

What Is Forgery?

Forgery involves willfully manufacturing, completing, or editing a "written instrument" or document to commit fraud. It also includes possessing, disposing of, or offering fraudulent documents known to be forged. Examples of forgery targets include notaries, driver's licenses, passports, artwork, letters of recommendation, bank statements, and electronic documents including altered or fabricated passwords and digital signatures.

Forgery is a Class C felony in Washington, carrying penalties of up to 5 years imprisonment and a maximum $10,000 fine.
